Taking Back Search at Scale: How a National PI & Family Law Firm Stopped Losing Cases to Competitors

Project Overview

Our client, a national firm handling personal injury and family law across multiple states, was losing high-intent clients to firms that showed up first in search. They had strong attorneys and results, but were underperforming for terms like “car accident lawyer,” “wrongful death attorney,” “divorce lawyer,” and “child custody attorney” in key markets—so they were leaving cases and fees on the table in every city they served. They needed to own the queries that drive consultations and case intake at scale.

We delivered an SEO engagement built for a multi-practice, multi-location firm: technical audits, practice-area and location keyword mapping, on-page and content strategy aligned to how people search when they need a lawyer, and local SEO so each office could capture “personal injury lawyer near me” and “family law attorney New York” demand. The result was a major jump in organic visibility across practices and geographies, more qualified leads and case submissions, and measurable growth in intake—proving that at the national level, the firms that dominate search are the ones that fill their caseloads.

Challenges

1
Extreme competition for high-value practice and location keywords — Terms like “car accident lawyer,” “wrongful death attorney,” “divorce lawyer,” “child custody,” and “personal injury attorney near me” are dominated by well-funded firms with strong domains and large content libraries. Our client was stuck on page 2 or 3 in many markets for the very searches that drive case intake
2
nconsistent keyword usage and weak on-page signals across practices — PI and family law pages weren’t built around the phrases potential clients actually use. Metadata was generic or duplicated across locations, and structure didn’t clearly support practice + location intent, so search engines didn’t see the firm as the obvious choice in each market.
3
Under-optimized technical foundation at scale — With a national, multi-location site, crawl waste, slow load times, thin internal linking, and duplicate or conflicting signals limited how well practice and location pages could rank. Authority wasn’t flowing to the pages that drive consultations and case submissions.
4
Limited content for the full client journey — People search by injury type, case type, location, and “what to expect.” The site had little content targeting those stages, so they were missing demand for specific practice areas, practice-area + city combinations, and trust-building queries.
5
Low visibility in local and service-area search — They weren’t ranking well for “personal injury lawyer + [city],” “family law attorney near me,” or practice + location combinations in many of their offices. Without a clear local footprint per market, they were invisible where urgency and trust drive the decision—and competitors were capturing those clients.

Solutions

1
Keyword research and mapping for PI and family law — We identified high-intent practice-area and location keywords people use when searching for an attorney, and mapped them to practice pages, location pages, and supporting content so the strategy captured qualified traffic in every market they serve.
2
On-page SEO across practice areas and locations — We optimized titles, meta descriptions, headers, images, and URLs for core practice areas and locations so every key page sent clear, relevant signals and improved both rankings and click-through from search at scale.
3
Stronger internal linking and site structure — We improved architecture and internal links so practice pages, location pages, and trust content supported each other across the national site, increasing crawl depth and topical authority for competitive legal terms.
4
Content strategy built for client intent — We created and optimized content around practice areas, case types, and local search behavior so the site could rank and convert for informational and consultation-intent queries—turning researchers into case submissions and consultation requests.
5
Technical and local SEO for national reach — We fixed technical issues blocking indexing and rankings, improved Core Web Vitals and schema (e.g. LegalService, LocalBusiness, FAQ), and strengthened location and service-area signals so each office could compete for “personal injury lawyer [city],” “family law attorney [city],” and local/map results in their markets.
